Area Excursions

Sri Lanka is an island that promises a treasure trove of culture, history, wild nature and spectacular scenery – and from Anantara Kalutara Resort you can discover it all with ease. Map out your own adventures if you love chance encounters, or book a guided trip to gain insights from the best local guides.

Galle City Tour

Galle City Tour

One of the country’s must-see attractions, this ancient citadel is packed with history and charm.

Learn how the largest living fort in Asia was built, using granite ballast carried by merchant ships arriving from Europe and coral from the ocean. Meet descendants from the original merchant families. Experience the island’s fascinating spice trade first-hand, as you take a glimpse back in time to colonial Ceylon.

Whale Watching in Mirissa

Whale Watching in Mirissa

A 90 minute drive from Anantara Kalutara Resort lies Mirissa Harbour. Board a fishing trawler that has been restored for leisure cruising and set sail for Weligama Bay, frequented by majestic whales between December and April each year. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins. Enjoy opportunities to go swimming, snorkeling, hand-line fishing and picnicking in a coconut-fringed cove.

Handunugoda Low Country Tea Plantation

Handunugoda Low Country Tea Plantation

An iconic vestige of Sri Lanka’s colonial heritage, Handunugoda is a 200 acre tea, rubber, cinnamon, pepper and coconut estate. Tour the immaculate plantation fields and visit the estate’s tea factory, which serves as a living and working private museum. Sip freshly brewed low country teas and admire vintage tea processing equipment. Take home a taste of your time here or buy souvenirs for loved ones, with a range of specialty teas available for purchase.

Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery

The Indian Ocean surrounding Sri Lanka is teeming with precious marine life, including a variety of turtles. The green turtle is the most common, while the leatherback is the largest of the five species found in Sri Lanka, and critically endangered. Though on the brink of extinction, five leatherback turtles are known to nest at Kosgoda Beach each year. With a strong focus on preservation, the hatchery programme is designed to maximise the number of hatchlings that reach the sea and survive through the critical stages of early life, making a visit to this sanctuary an inspirational experience.

Sinharaja Rainforest

Explore a virgin rainforest that is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Covering an incredible 18,900 acres, bordered by rivers on three sides, the reserve is home to over 50 percent of Sri Lanka’s endemic mammal and butterfly species, as well as many kinds of insects, reptiles and rare amphibians.

Kalu Ganga Sunset Boat Cruise

One of Sri Lanka’s most famous waterways is the Kalu Ganga River, which twists almost 100 miles from Sri Pada - the sacred mountain believed to be the footprint of the Buddha. Meandering through Kalutara, the river flows past quaint settlements, scenic forests and picturesque plantations. Peaceful yet captivating, a cruise on the Kalu Ganga River at sunset offers a unique destination experience that is undeniably romantic.

Richmond Castle

Richmond Castle

Constructed in 1896, Richmond Castle is a magnificent hybrid of Indian and British architecture. Learn how shiploads of timber from Burma were imported to build this superb mansion, complete with stables, staff quarters, guard rooms, a dance floor and all the requirements needed for a luxurious lifestyle. Explore the 42 acre estate and its beautiful rooms. Pause to admire the elaborate carvings, as well as Italian and Scottish glass windows and mirrors. Journey back in time to an era of grandeur that is testament to the island’s rich history.

Kalutara Vihara

Sri Lanka is a country of iconic sacred sites and Kalutara is home to the world’s only hollow Buddhist shrine - Kalutara Vihara.  Visit this unique dagoba which features more than 70 murals, illustrating the life of Buddha.

Lunuganga

Geoffrey Bawa’s country estate offers a serene escape for nature lovers. Stroll around the terraced gardens that feature sculptures and oriental urns, admiring views of the countryside and lake.
