Geoffrey Bawa

Geoffrey Bawa was one of the greatest architects of his generation, and known throughout the world for his signature style of Tropical Modernism – sunlit, breezy structures at one with their surrounds. His designs can be found across the entirety of Sri Lanka – from private oceanfront estates to the iconic parliament building in bustling Colombo – as well as further afield, from Bali to Mauritius.

In early 1995, Geoffrey Bawa was commissioned by a former pioneer in Sri Lankan tourism to design a luxury resort on a site between the estuary of the Kalu Ganga and the Indian Ocean. This was to be one of his final projects. Following his illness and death, the project lay dormant for 15 years until one of his protégés took on the project. Today Anantara Kalutara retains many of Bawa’s original constructions, most noticeably the main building with the arrival hall, lobby lounge and upstairs bar.

Bawa’s vision inspires the resort library, modelled on his personal study, where furnishings either designed or owned by him are put together to create a particularly Bawa-style interior. Sketches from his archives and some of his favorite designs in Batik done by his contemporaries Ena de Silva and the textile designer Barbara Sansoni are displayed here.

Follow in Bawa’s footsteps with a visit to the Lunuganga Estate, where the architect poured forty years of his life into transforming this abandoned cinnamon then rubber estate into a garden paradise. Inspired by Italian Renaissance and English landscaped gardens, the estate features unfolding courtyards, lily ponds, romantic pavilions and rows of frangipani. It was where the architect dreamed of retiring, and where his most beloved ideas bloomed.
